I have only been to two fan conventions in my entire life. One was a Star Trek con, back when I lived in Boston. It was miserable and no one was really all that friendly. And I only went for Brent Spiner, who didn’t turn up.

And then there was Gallifrey One in 2008. I was going through a very difficult time and had discovered Doctor Who to escape my pretty darn miserable life. So my friend, Rachel, actually raised funds amongst my online friends to fly me out to Los Angeles for the con that year.

I honestly did not know what to expect, but ended up having an amazing time. Everyone was so friendly and welcoming and I had the first really good time I had experienced in awhile.

So this year, I decided to return to Gallifrey One. But of course, being the person that seems to push me into things, Rachel pointed me towards a thread on the DW Cosplay LiveJournal group. Of course, next thing I know, I’m signing up (the cosplay is the Sorority Girls of Rassilon – basically… it begs to ask the question: “What if Doctor Who’s companions were all in a sorority?” – those who were at last year’s con or know anything about last year’s con will understand this). So we’re wearing black dresses and red heels. And I’m signed up.

The question, though, is “Which companion will I be?” If I had not been impatient with my hair, I could have pulled off Donna, or possibly Doctor Grace Holloway. So I blew that one already. So I decided to buy a wig online and ended up deciding on Lady Christina de Souza from Planet of the Dead. This was an easy choice because I also have her standard costume: black pants, black boots and big sunglasses. I also have a leather jacket similar to hers, but it’s sort of faded.

So I went shopping today for the dress and the shoes and a black tee. I found all three, fortunately.

But the wig I ordered was one of those cheap Halloween wigs. It was not straight, was too long and was curly. It looked completely different in its picture online. I tried to mess with it some, but finally gave up. It was a piece of crap (you get what you pay for).

So instead, I found a better wig made of that Kanekolon stuff that the Japanese invented. It’s a good quality wig that can even be styled.

I ended up spending more on the wig than the dress!

I understand how this cosplay thing can get one carried away now.

But this totally makes up for not getting to dress up for Halloween in what feels like forever. It’s a nice chance to get to be someone else for a day or two and why not jump at that?
